ESV Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. NIV Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another. . .” means the only debt we are commanded to acquire is love. Paul said in his epistle to the Romans, “I am debtor both to the Greeks and to the barbarians; both to the wise and to the unwise” (1:14).
The sense of the Greek is that we should not let any debt remain outstanding—that we should not keep on owing anyone for anything. That may be understood as a requirement to always pay what we owe in a timely manner according to whatever agreement we have made with the lender.
But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
Romans 10:12–13 Reminds Us of What is Available in Christ
Oh God, open up a door to lead somebody today to call on your name and be saved that they might know your riches. So, God, we pray for this right around us in our sphere of influence, and then we pray for this far from us.
Christ specifically tells the disciples they will receive anything they ask—but only if they have faith. This means trust in God and His power to do what He wants to do. It also means an alignment with the will of God—it does not mean using the Creator as a vending machine.
13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
Dear Father, May the word of Christ always be on my lips and in my heart. May I make known to everyone in every place that Jesus is Lord and that you have raised him from the dead. Remind me continually that I have no cause to be ashamed of my faith.
