Psalms reveal Valentine’s Day truths (2024)

Carey and I are still reading the Bible all the way through.

And we are peeking into the Passion translation from time to time. We miss some of our favorite verses the exact way we memorized them, but we both love the imagery of the Passion translation.

Carey is ahead of me in the New Testament, but we are both in Psalms in the Old Testament.

On Valentine’s Day morning she read Psalm 16 to me, saying it is perfect for Valentine’s Day. She read the whole Psalm, including verse 11: “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

And the same verse from the Passion translation: “For you bring me a continual revelation of resurrection life, the path to the bliss that brings me face-to-face with you.”

I was in Psalm 18 and read verse 29: “With your help I can advance against a troop, with my God I can scale a wall.” And the Passion’s: “With you as my strength I can crush an enemy horde, advancing through every stronghold that stands in front of me.”

The week before, our daughter Lindsey sent a screengrab from a website that tells your Bible verse for the year.

Carey’s verse for 2016 was Psalm 16:11; mine was Psalm 18:29.

Warning: If you actually go to the site at http://bit.ly/2016Verse and try it, it changes every time you input your name. When I keyed in my name myself, a different verse came up.

Some would say that makes the site random. I say that makes it even more amazing that the time Lindsey typed in our names, the verses we had just read came up as our verses of the year. That’s odd; that’s God.

When I first started reading Psalms, I regretted not being able to hear the music — I can see the words written as stanzas and wanted to know how it sounded when David sang it.

The day after Valentine’s Day, I was reading more Psalms, and Psalm 25 seemed familiar. I’m sure many people already knew this way before me, but the Third Day song “My Hope Is You” is Psalm 25, almost word-for-word. I sing that song at the top of my lungs every time I cut grass.

And Psalm 27 is threaded throughout the Toby Mac song “Lose Myself,” another of my lawnmower favorites.

I am continually amazed that the same God who created the universe can — and does — care what I do every minute of every day. And amazed at the truth stated in the Passion translation of Psalm 23:1: “The Lord is my Fierce Protector and my Pastor, I always have more than enough.”

You can’t remove all the need in the world today, but there are lots of ways you can help. Ask God to tell you your verse of the year.
