FORT WORTH, Texas - Michigan State gymnastics sophom*oreNikki Smithand juniorSkyla Schultewrapped up the 2024 season for the Spartans at the NCAA Championships on Thursday afternoon in Fort Worth, Texas, at Dickies Arena.
In the final routine of the third rotation, Schulte put together a spectacular performance on floor, earning a 9.9125 to finish ina tie for seventh place in the meet, good for Second Team All-America honors.She became the first Michigan State gymnast to earn multiple NCAA All-America honors and just the second overall to earn multiple All-American nods, joining AIAW All-American Pam Steckroat (bars, 1977-78). Schulte previously earned Second Team All-American honors on beam in 2022 and is the first MSU gymnast to collect floor All-America honors. She collects the fifth overall All-America accolade for MSU gymnastics.
Smith, competing on beam for just the fifth time this season and making her first NCAA Championships appearance, kicked off the afternoon for the Spartans in the second rotation following Stanford's beam lineup. She scored a 9.825 for her second-best score of the season on the event to finish 20thoverall in the first session.
Thursday marked the third-straight year the Spartans qualified an individual competitor to the NCAA Championships and the second-consecutive season MSU had multiple individual qualifiers. Schulte became MSU's first gymnastto qualify for multiple NCAA Championships since Rochelle Robinson in 2007-08 and just the third overall.
The meet marked the official end to the 2024 season for the Spartans, who finished the season ranked 14th in the country and totaled 29 wins for the most in MSU history. MSU earned its second-straight Big Ten regular season title and first Big Ten Championship, while Schulte became MSU's first Big Ten all-around champion and Smith collected regular-season All-America honors on vault. The Spartans earned four of their top 10 team scores in program history, including the team's highest road score in history with a 198.050 at Michigan on February 4. Schulte and Smith both earned First Team All-Big Ten honors.
