High school roundup: Monmouth softball earns quarterfinal win over Lisbon (2024)

MONMOUTH — Rileigh Chase, June Foyt and Bella Lyons had two hits apiece as second-seeded Monmouth topped seventh-seeded Lisbon 9-2 in the Class C South softball quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Shannah Parsons threw a six-hitter for Monmouth (13-4), which will face third-seeded Spruce Mountain in the semifinals Saturday.

Alivia Field had three hits for Lisbon (5-12).

BUCKFIELD 15, ST. DOMINIC 1: Carmen Crockett pitched a no-hitter and drove in three runs as the second-seeded Bucks (16-1) beat the No. 7 Saints (10-7) in five innings in a Class D South quarterfinal at Buckfield.

Buckfield will host a semifinal on Saturday against the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 6 Forest Hills (7-8) and No. 3 Richmond (10-6).

Crockett struck out six and walked six batters. She also drew three of the Bucks 17 walks. Brittany Carrier and Chloe Bennett each had two RBIs.

Kassidy Cote drove in the only run for St. Dom’s, in the fourth inning.

SKOWHEGAN 15, LEWISTON 0:The top-seeded River Hawks (15-1) pounded out 13 hits in a three-inning win over the No. 8 Blue Devils in the Class A North quarterfinals in Skowhegan.

Skowhegan will face the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between No. 4 Camden Hills and No. 5 Edward Little in Saturday’s semifinals.

Skowhegan pitcher Lillian Noyes allowed two hits and struck out eight batters. Annabelle Morris had three hits and three RBIs, while teammates Carlie Jarvais and Madalynne Morris added two apiece.

Isabella Enos tripled for Lewiston (5-11).

SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 14, MADISON 4:Jaydn Pingree tallied four hits and drove in three runs to pace the third-seeded Phoenix (14-3) over the sixth-seeded Bulldogs (8-10) in a Class C South quarterfinal in Jay.

One of Pingree’s four hits was a double. Rylee Turner had two doubles and a single. She, Leah Burgess, Jazmine Pingree and Makinlee Holt drove in two runs apiece for Spruce Mountain, which advances to face second-seeded Monmouth in the semifinals later this week.

Turner picked up the win for the Phoenix. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out five batters.

Emma Anton had a double and two RBIs for Madison. Mackenzie Robbins also had a double.

BASEBALL
MT. ABRAM 3, TRAIP 2: Kaiden Longley got on base and moved into scoring position, and Bryce Wilcox brought him home for the winning run in the eighth inning of a C South quarterfinal against the Rangers in Salem Township.

Longley hustled his way to a single, stole second and moved to third base on a passed ball. Then Wilcox hit a single down the third-base line.

Starting pitcher Payton Mitchell had 10 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings for the third-seeded Roadrunners (12-5). Logan Dube pitched the eighth inning and earned the win.

Both teams had four hits. Ash Rollins tripled for Mt. Abram, while Colby Christiansen hit a double for the sixth-seeded Rangers.

Christiansen also pitched and fanned 10 batters in six innings.

The Roadrunners will play either No. 10 Mountain Valley (8-9) or No. 2 Sacopee Valley (12-4) in the semifinals on Saturday.

GREENVILLE/PISCATAQUIS 8, BUCKFIELD 5: The Bucks forced extra innings but ran out of answers in the eighth and fell to the Lakers in a Class D South quarterfinal in Buckfield.

Fifth-seeded Greenville/Piscataquis (12-5) advances to face No. 1 St. Dom’s (15-2), which defeated No. 8 Boothbay/Wiscasset 10-0 on Wednesday, in the semifinals on Saturday.

Buckfield, in its first baseball season since 2021, finishes the campaign with a 7-9 record.

After the Lakers scored in the top of the first, their three-run fourth and one-run fifth were answered by the Bucks. Buckfield then tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Greenville/Piscataquis plated three in the eighth inning.

Brady Gaw doubled and tripled for the Lakers. He also earned the win by pitching 1/3 inning. Shane Chadbourne got the save.

Noah Kain pitched the first 6 2/3 innings, striking out 10 and allowing four hits and four walks. He also tallied a team-high three hits.

Gabe White tripled, singled and doubled to lead the Buckfield offense. He pitched the first seven innings, striking out six while scattering eight hits.
