Study on antibacterial and flavonoid content of ethanolic extract of Punica granatum (pomegranate) peel

Pomegranate is known for it's many health benefits. These benefits are due to the biological active compounds which are present in the pulp as well as in the peel of the pomegranate. The active compounds from the peel were obtained using cold percolation method using ethanol as solvent. Antibacterial activity of pomegranate peel extract(PPE) was studied on E.coli, E. coli NCIM 2065,Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi B, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, S. aureus, S. aureus NCIM2079, Shigella flexneri, Lactobacilus casei var shirota by agar well diffusion method. All organisms were sensitive to the extract with inhibitory concentration ranging from 25mg/mL-100mg/mL except Lactobacilus casei var shirota which was resistant to even 100mg/mL concentration of PPE. Flavonoid content of the extract was found to be 10mg quercetin equivalent/g of extract.

The antimicrobial activity of pomegranate (Punica granatum) juice

—In The present study microbial property of pomegranate juice was evaluated against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) using disk inhibition zone (Heart brain diffusion) method. The bacteria were obtained from research center of Sulaimani Polytechnic University . The result of this study showed good antibacterial effect of pomegranate juice against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria, diameter of inhibition zones were significantly higher in pomegranate juice as compared to standard antibiotic disc. The present study concluded that the juice of Punica granatum have a strong antibacterial activity.

Punica granatum L. (pomegranate) is known popularly by its nutritional values and healthy benefits. The current study is aimed the evaluation of antibacterial effects of Punica granatum fruit extracts that cultivated in Algeria against environmental and clinical isolates of β-lactamase producing methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae by using agar diffusion methods and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)-determination. Moreover, the extracts were investigated for their phenolic content by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The quantitative assays of total polyphenols revealed a richness of the different pomegranate extract in polyphenols, peel and seed ethanol extracts contain the highest values (880.06 ± 11.2 mg GAE/100 g and 1160.1 ± 45.20 mg GAE/100 g, respectively). Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is used as herbal medicine in India and other countries. Pomegranate is an important source of bioactive properties. In Ayurveda, it is been used to stimulate the appetite and for treating digestive problems. The present study is focused on assessing the antimicrobial activity of pomegranate leaves and peel extracts using two representative human pathogens and to check the synergistic activity of pomegranate peel extract and pomegranate leaf extract using ‘newly’ designed ‘Grid method’. The Grid method has been used to determine the synergistic action of these extracts in multiple combinations on a single plate using autoclaved Whatman paper strips having dimensions 3mm width by 8cm length that were impregnated with extracts. Antimicrobial activity of pomegranate ( Punica granatum L.) fruit peels

Food-borne diseases such as listeriosis and diseases caused by the emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens (e.g. Staphylococcus aureus) are globally recognized as environmental hazards to the food supply and human health. Natural inhibitors for pathogenic microorganisms have been explored in many plants. The antimicrobial activity against some food-borne pathogens by various extracts from pomegranate fruit peels was evaluated using both in vitro (agar diffusion) and in situ (food) methods. The 80% methanolic extract of peels (WME) was a potent inhibitor for Listeria monocytogenes, S. aureus, Escherichia coli and Yersinia enterocolitica. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of WME against Salmonella enteritidis was the highest (4 mg/ml). WME afforded > 1 log10 reduction of L. monocytogenes in food (fish) during storage at 4 °C. Phytochemical analyses revealed the presence of active inhibitors in peels, including phenolics and flavonoids. The activity of WME was related to its higher content (262.5 mg/g) of total phenolics.

Due to the growing awareness of Punica granatum fruit’s health-promoting properties, the pomegranate is increasingly used for food purposes. This results in the formation of biological waste products such as peels. A biowaste circular bioeconomy strategy holds great prospective for a sustainable economy. Therefore, a sustainable and environmentally friendly way of disposing of waste (e.g., use of biowaste to obtain high-value components (e.g., punicalagins, enzymes)) is crucial for the protection of the environment and human health. In the presented study, the content of total phenols and proanthocyanidins in ten samples of Punica granatum fruit (juice, aqueous (H2O) and ethanolic (EtOH) extracts of peels and seeds) was determined.
