These Rissoles are juicy, tasty and flavorful appetizers. Traditionally beef Rissoles made with onions, zucchini, carrot, ground beef and some herbs. They are delicious and super easy to make, plus they can also be made ahead and kept in the freezer to fry as needed.

You can easily get frozen Rissoles from supermarkets, bakeries and along the streets. However, homemade rissoles are much healthier and fresh.

They are delicious appetizers or side dish made from ground mince, mostly using beef but can also be made with chicken, turkey or lamb. These rissoles shaped like burger patties then baked or fried in a pan.

They usually serve with ketchup, mashed potatoes or salad. What you use as filling with the mince is largely based on your preference.

Rissoles Ingredients

Ground beef: Use ground beef based on your preference and budget.

Onion: Make sure you use finely grated onion.

Breadcrumbs: Use breadcrumbs for a crispy texture. You can use gluten-free breadcrumbs if you like.

Garlic: Use minced garlic; you may also add extra garlic based on your preference.

Veggies: Use fresh zucchini and carrot for a crunchy bite.

Egg: Eggs help bind the rissole without falling apart.

Herbs: Dried thyme and oregano for the best flavour.

Worcestershire Sauce: This sauce gives a unique flavour to the whole dish. It is made of vinegar, anchovies, garlic, onions, sugar, chilli pepper, cloves and tamarind, giving it a tangy, sweet and savoury taste. The balance of all these tastes is what makes this dish taste rich and flavourful.

Olive Oil: You may also use vegetable oil or sunflower oil for cooking.

Seasoning: Salt and black pepper.

Tomato Ketchup: They are so delicious with Ketchup. However, You may also use any sauce you fabncy instead of tomato ketchup for serving.

One: In a large bowl, grate the onion, zucchini, and carrot using a box grater, then add the breadcrumbs and mix well with a wooden spoon until combined.

Two: Add ground beef, garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, oregano and thyme. Mix well until incorporated.

Three: Now, scoop ¼ cup of the mixture put between your hands and form a patty.

Four: Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-low heat, add the first patch of the patties in the hot oil and cook for 3-4 minutes, then flip them and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until golden brown.

Five: Transfer theme into a serving dish lined with kitchen paper, garnish with some chopped parsley and serve with your favourite sauce.

Top Tips

  • If you prefer the them a little crunchier, simply roll them in breadcrumbs before frying.
  • If your mixture is too loose, then add more breadcrumbs until you get the right texture.
  • You may use wholegrain mustard instead of Worcestershire sauce if you prefer.
  • The egg can be substituted for 1tbs chia seeds soaked in 2tbs of water.
  • It is easiest to shape the rissoles using wet hands, which helps bind all ingredients.
  • They should always be thoroughly cooked and should not be served raw. So, it is best to insert a skewer into the thickest part of the rissole to check if it’s ready to eat.
  • When cooking, do not press them flat as it will cause all those delicious tasty juices to run out.
  • Don’t add too many breadcrumbs as it may dry out the mixture. Just add enough of it for the best texture.
  • Rissoles may crack open when frying; to prevent this, you may dip them in cold water before rolling them.
  • Don’t miss out on the onions and zucchini as the juiciness and extra flavour comes from them.

  • For added spice, you can add extra chilli pepper or jalapeno to the added spices.
  • You can substitute ground beef with lamb or turkey.
  • Make chicken rissoles by replacing the beef with ground chicken.
  • Make the rissoles a little larger, and when you shape them, fill them with a cube of cheese. Roll them in flour and fry until golden brown.
  • You may add your preferable herbs, soy sauce, sea salt flakes, lemon zest for added flavour.

Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup Tomato Ketchup (for serving)

Instructions

  • In a big mixing bowl, grate the onion, zzucchini, and carrot using a box grater, then add the Breadcrumbs and mix well until combined.

    ½ cup breadcrumbs, 1 zucchini, 1 carrot, 1 onion

  • Net, add ground beef, garlic, egg, Worcestershire Sauce, salt, pepper, oregano and thyme. Mix well until incorporated.
