Smoothies For Weight Loss

If you are trying to lose weight, there are three things to consider when deciding on smoothie recipes:

  • TASTE: when your goal is to reduce fat or calories, choosing food that is flavorful is so important. There is nothing worse than trying to choke down a smoothie that tastes horrible!
  • NUTRITION: even if weight loss is your primary goal, make sure your smoothie recipes are nutritious and contain fiber.
  • CALORIES: carefully consider the ingredients. Many smoothie ingredients are delicious and healthy, but they come with a high calorie count.

The Secret To Delicious Banana Smoothies

I had been making this banana oatmeal smoothie recipe for a few weeks when I decided to try it with frozen bananas. What a complete gamechanger. The frozen bananas took it from really good to absolutely amazing. They make the smoothie thicker, and the frozen bananas eliminate the need to use ice cubes.

How to Freeze Bananas

  • Remove the peel from 4 or 5 bananas.
  • Cut your bananas into halves.
  • Lay them out, not touching, on a parchment paper covered baking sheet.
  • Place them in the freezer for 24 hours.
  • Once frozen as separate pieces, bananas can be stored in the freezer in a resealable bag or freezer-safe container.

Ingredients + Variations

  • Almond milk: I use Silk Unsweetened Almond Milk with 30 calories per cup. Oat milk, soy milk, or coconut milk can be substituted. If you don’t need a dairy-free smoothie, regular skim milk can be used as ell.
  • Oatmeal: either quick oats (instant) or old fashioned rolled oats work work great.
  • Banana: a large frozen banana works best!
  • Vanilla bean paste: adds a flavorful, nutty taste.
  • Optional ingredients: all the optional ingredients listed in the printable recipe card are featured in the video. Add only what you like. I love adding honey and a hint of cinnamon, but unfortunately the honey adds quite a few calories.
  • Other addition ideas and flavors: strawberries, blueberries, almond butter, any kind of nut butter, chia seeds, greek yogurt, maple syrup.

How to Make

  • Combine all ingredients in a blender.
  • Mix on low speed until the banana and/or ice are broken up.
  • Mix on high speed for 1 minute.
  • Serve immediately.

Tips for Perfect Smoothies

  • When using frozen fruit, order matters. After many tries, I found that adding the liquid first, followed by the frozen fruit works the best for blending. The remaining ingredients can be added in any order.
  • It’s important to blend the smoothie for at least a minute in order to nicely grind up the oatmeal. Doing this gives a better consistency.
  • Your blender makes a difference. Any kind of blender will work, but one with extra power will do a better job of mincing the oatmeal.

I can honestly say that this is the best smoothie recipe I have ever made. It’s fun to add different ingredients, and switch up the taste. However, I always go back to that original recipe of almond milk, oats, a frozen banana, and vanilla!
